The name Hans Holmér is mentioned a lot in the Palme Murder conspiracies. He was the first lead investigator to the murder of Olof Palme, and took control of the investigation on March 1st 1986. When people describe Hans, a picture is taking shape in my mind of a kind of James Bond looking man. Special Forces trained soldier, high level athlete, Head of the Secret Police and later Chief Commissioner of the Stockholm county. Impressive.
Hans Holmér took charge of the investigation into the murder of the Swedish Prime Minister, Olof Palme on March 1st of 1986, the morning after the incident happened. This is a curiosity because Holmér wasn't an investigator and had never headed an investigation before in his life. Actual criminal investigators were available, and yet it was Hans Holmér who was in charge.
His career had spanded almost 30 years as an administrator in public management, and mainly within the police departments. In 1970 he was appointed the position as Head of the National Secret Service, called SÄPO, by Olof Palme. Later he went into larger public administration roles as commissioner of Stockholm city, and later the county of Stockholm, which was his position in 1986. By this time Hans Holmér was 55 years old.
What we know today is that he could keep a secret. Several times he covered for the Social Democrats and their scandals. It's quite obvious that one favor led to another down the road, and that was part of his impressive career.
Hans Holmér was dead set on solving the murder, he said. So he got a plane to fly over Stockholm to photograph all rooftops, and make people look for the murder weapon. The first day came down after filming and realized they forgot to record it. So they had to do it again. This is just one of many stupid prioritizations of resources in the important first hours, days and until the end of his run as the lead investigator into the murder. It just keeps on happening, even after Holmér is out.
Before Palme was buried, the police had arrested a suspect. His name was Victor Gunnarsson and he was a known right-wing hangaround. There was no real evidence against him, but it was less embarrassing for the politicians to attend the Palme funeral with a suspect incarcerated.
Later on that year a few top Social Democrats had decided that PKK was the perfect choice as suspect. So the police solve crimes by pointing to a suspect, and then focus the resources on proving it. I thought that you would gather evidence, and follow it until you find a pattern or motive or whatever. It seems opposite in any case. I've even heard that they (politicians and intelligence agencies) had an underground agent act as an 'agent provocateur', to set up top PKK people living in Sweden. Holmér was of course in on this conspiracy as a good Social Democrat and intelligence man (and so was Olof Palme).
The government and police is acting illegally, and are either completely competent or incompetent, depending on what they want to achieve. If they are trying to derail the investigation, they are very successful and utterly competent - the murder is still not solved in 2024. If they did their best to solve the murder, they were extremely incompetent.
Hans Holmér blamed innocent people for the murder and was involved in destroying people's lives with his actions and his statements to the press and officials during his career. He always stayed loyal to his friends in the Social Democratic party and had a blessed career in return.
In February 1987, after 11 months as lead investigator, Hans Holmér resigned. But he didn't stop his investigations into the PKK track. A secret investigation was about to take place, which was later known as the Ebbe Carlsson affair. The investigation was of course illegal, and they did many shady and criminal acts during this affair.
When you look at the pictures of Hans Holmér he seems looks like a mad man on drugs - a Swedish Hunter S. Thompson - when slinging the guns around on the press conferences. Other times he looks like a junkie craving his next fix.
A man like him should not be in such a high position in any country, but it seems to be norm rather than the exception in Sweden, that nasty people are on the highest public positions.
